Technical information for development
Practical Answers was created to provide a means of accessing the wealth of technical information held by Practical Action. It is made up of:
Technical Briefs, a series of fact-sheets on appropriate technology in subjects including energy, construction, water, food processing, transport and manufacturing, which can be downloaded free of charge from this site.
Resource Centres, based in the Practical Action offices, are open to the public and hold a distinctive collection of appropriate technology and development literature.
The Technical Enquiry Service supplying, free of charge, technical and developmental information to development workers, community-based organisations, NGOs and other agencies using appropriate technologies to implement sustainable development
Other information resources supported by Practical Action include:
Practical Action Journals including: Boiling Point for those working on the technical, social, financial and environmental issues of household energy for people in poor communities, and Food Chain containing practical information on every aspect of small-scale food processing, from ideas, method and appropriate technologies to marketing.
Hands On, a multimedia information source using television, radio, the internet, personal computers and the printed word to describe some positive project work in development. Hands On consists of short TV programmes, audio programmes, and an enquiry service provided by Practical Action.
The International Network for Technical Information - INTI - brings together the combined information resources of the major European development bodies, including Practical Action, to ensure that our enquirers receive the best possible help. More on INTI
The Building Advisory Service & Information Network - basin
The basin website links development professionals working in Northern and Southern development organisations focused on building issues around the world.

Supporting this information, Practical Action has many years of experience acquired through project implementation around the world in a wide range of technical subjects. Information on Practical Action's project work in energy, food production, shelter, transport, small-scale mining, agroprocessing, manufacturing, disaster reduction, information & communication technologies and water & sanitation can be found in the specialist areas from the menu bar at the left of the page.
